Why are humans getting taller and taller?

Question by Bradley: Why are humans getting taller and taller?
Over the years, people seem to just be getting bigger and taller. Why is this? Are growth hormones being put in food now?

good nutrition, better health systems to name a few. before people didn't have access to good food or any food at all. and if everyone is getting taller - they make children that are more likely to be tall as well.

  7. The height rise in people over the past hundred years has been due to improved nutrition. With some exceptions this growth rise now seems to have stopped. We have basically reached our maximum height; you won't be seeing 7 footers in 50 years.I am middle aged and five foot five and have noticed that most of the young women I work with (18-24) are roughly the same height as I am , give or TAKE a few inches. I also know several small fine boned men who are only an inch or two taller than me; this is all down to genetics.
It is also a myth that all our ancestors were short. Hunter gatherers were tall people because of the amount of protein they consumed. Height dwindled in the neolithic when we consumed more grains and dairy. However by the bronze age the average heights in the British isles and Ireland (there may be variations in other parts of Europe) were about 5ft 8 for men and five foot 4 for women, with six foot men, or occasionally even taller, not unknown. This is around the SAME height for women as today and only an inch or two shorter than the average man of 2012.
It was inthe middle ages that crowded living, poverty and poor diet made many people small...but you'll note many of the famous leaders (the wealthy) were tall. We didn't recover the average heights of our bronze age ancestors, on average, till early in the 20th.
