Concerning Human Growth Hormone and Height?

Question by Enigma: Concerning Human Growth Hormone and Height?
I’m posting this question again, verbatim in the hopes that I get some better answers.

Please try to address my specific questions as opposed to offering other insight.

I am male, if that isn’t already implied.

{I will turn 16 on the 8th of September, 2007
I am 5' 6 tall and weigh about 145 lbs

Height has always been a sensitive issue in my eyes and I can understand its importance because of how it is perceived by society.

Suffice it to say that I don't want to stay 5' 6 for one reason or another.

I have looked into other methods for height increase and found that most, if not all are ineffective, with the exception of the "limb lengthening procedure" and "human growth hormone," respectively.

Just judging from a cursory glance, the first of these two would not be feasible.

That leaves Human Growth Hormone. Human Growth Hormone
is available in oral sprays, pills, and injections.

Essentially, only the injections work.

I have about $ 10,000 to spare offhand.

I have been reading prudently and found that HGH by injection, the cost that is, ranges from "$ 10,000 - $ 18,000

I don't quite understand the discrepancy. Nonetheless, I am willing to bear any discomfort or inconvenience if that is the issue at hand.

It is required that the epiphyseal plates be open for HGH to work properly, in increasing height gains in adolescents

In a nutshell I have three potential problems.

a)Do I have enough money to pay for the treatment ($ 10,000 no more, no less)?
b)Have my growth plates closed?

c)Supposing that cost and eligibility don’t pose an issue and I reach the treatment stage, about how much could I be expected to grow and what might be my final height?

Thanks for your help, it is greatly appreciated.}

Answer by trappperg
It seems as you have done your homework well. These are all valid concerns and really should be discussed with a qualified physician who can examine you and find out your complete medical history firsthand.
A simple x-ray can tell you if your growth plates have fused. Cost of hGH varies from doctor to doctor and geographical location.
How much you can expect to grow is hard to tell without a complete history and examination.
Good luck. :)

What is the procedure to clone Human Growth Hormone?

Question by Think: What is the procedure to clone Human Growth Hormone?
Whether it is by protein secretion technology or Recombinant DNA technology or mouse-cell technology, I need to know the exact method stepwise, the vectors/phages used, with diagrams if possible.

If anyone can explain it to me or if u could direct me to some weblink, it would be highly appreciated. (Wiipedia is not of much help here).

Answer by Chris W
You're right, the information under Wikipedia's Growth Hormone Treatment section is very vague. However, it does tell you that the gene for the growth hormone is inserted into bacteria, which mass produce the protein.

From that, we can surmise what you could potentially do to mass produce growth hormone.

First, of all, you need the gene. That's simple. You get a bunch of pituitary cells and then create some primers that bind upstream and downstream of the actual gene.

These primers should consist of approximately 25 base nucleotides, and should bind before the gene and after the stop codon.

You then use PCR to amplify it up. That technique can be found in any old Molecular Biology textbook, though the Maniatis book (referenced below) is very good and detailed on this.

Now the best thing to do next is to put your gene of choice into a plasmid (a circular piece of DNA) that expresses an antibiotic resistance gene, and right in front of a gene promoter that is always switched on (and obviously, one that forces the bacteria to produce vast quantities of the hormone).

That's very simple. Use a nuclease to cut your plasmid. (It's best to use two nucleases, to cut out a small section of the plasmid DNA out). Use the same nucleases to cut the ends of your extract gene (making sure the nuclease that cuts upstream of your extract DNA is also the same nuclease that cuts at the "upstream" part of your plasmid and vice versa). That means you have to find a nuclease that cuts at the right places, which may require a bit of searching.

Because both have been cut by the same enzyme, they'll have sticky ends that match. They'll anneal naturally and because you used the same enzyme to cut upstream of both plasmid and extract gene, the gene will anneal the right way round instead of backwards. (If it anneals backwards, the gene won't work). Use a DNA ligase to join up the backbone and voila, you've got a plasmid that should express antibiotic resistance and your hormone gene.

Transform it into bacteria, possibly using heat shock. Select for the bacteria that express the antibiotic gene (as it should also express the growth hormone), by putting it on to an agar plate with the antibiotic in and lots of goodies and nutrients for the bacteria.

Only the ones with the plasmid will survive and they'll form little colonies on a plate. Now you've got to check that your plasmid contains the gene. After all, the insertion of your gene into the plasmid could have failed.

That's simple. All you have to do is take a little bit from a colony, break it open and use a pair of primers that bind at the 5' end and the 3' end of the gene, and do a PCR. If the gene is there, you'll get a product. If not, you won't.

Then, you do a Western blot, to make sure the protein is actually being made. You could have skipped the above PCR step, but there was the chance that some rogue growth hormone could have infected your samples. Doing the PCR, shows you that any protein is there because the bacteria is making it from the gene you put into it, and not because it just happened to be on some of your apparatus.

I'll refer you to the sources below, as a Western blot is a long detailed procedure that'll make this answer insanely long.

After you've done that and proved to yourself that the bacteria has your gene and is making your protein, you grow it up in a huge vat full of nutrients. Siphon some off every now and then, and extract the protein.

You need do nothing more, except keep growing the bacteria, making sure it's always there and that the antibiotic selection is always on. If it isn't, the bacteria will eventually reject the plasmid, as it won't be of any use to it.

There you have it. It may not be the exact same protocol as what industry uses, but it will get you similar results.

What exactly about meat is good for you?

Question by beebs: What exactly about meat is good for you?
We are told that meat protein is essential to survival. We are told that we get vitamins and iron from meat. The truth is, we only get that because the animals are fed supplements to give them the vitamins we need (animals to not make B12 naturally, any more than humans do-they get it from their feed) Meat contains blood, pus, urine, feces, disease, growth hormones, steroids, antibiotics, purines, cholesterol, parasites, bacteria, amines, and a whole host of other things-there is no way to get the vitamins and protein without getting all of the other stuff. What is good about any of that? I can get all of the vitamins, protein, minerals, and other nutrients entirely through a plant and grain based diet. Please tell me why you think meat makes sense. Please, no silly answers like we are "designed" to eat meat, we are clearly not or we could hunt it, kill it, catch it and consume it without the use of tools or cooking. Intelligent answers only please
please no bashing, just good answers

Best answer:

Answer by Jeannette P
Traditionally, meat has been a staple of the American diet. Our ancesters hunted and killed four legged creatures to provide sustanence for their families. Alot of additional foods were not readily available, so meat was a mainstay with veges and potatos on the side. When meat was not available, then they were stuck with whatever was on hand. Additionally, fish were caught, dried and preserved in salt, as well as early forms of pork and beef, to get them thru the winters. Our ancesters didn't know about tofu or plant proteins. As time has passed, eating meat has been a welcomed tradition in most families. The ability to raise beef and pork to become fatter and meatier came by developing hormones to ensure that it would happen. Then came the need to be able to store it without fear of contamination, so, antibiotics were given to cattle and fowl and pork all in the spirit of selling more to hungry Americans everywhere. Why do we eat meat? For some its a spiritual belief that God put four legged and winged creatures on the earth for man to consume. For others, its tradition. For many, its about acquired taste and habit. Statistics are now showing that too much red meat consumption can raise cholesteral and eventually lead to coronary disease. So, now we are seeing leaner cuts and lower fat. We're also being pushed to eat more fish, although with the fear of mercury poisoning, we can't do much of that. People are turning to a combination of vegetarian diets that include fish and less meat. Perhaps, when our conciousness increases more than our need to consume what this planet offers, we will find alternatives that are planet and people friendly!

For people who KNOW about growth hormone deficiency?

Question by Mary Jane: For people who KNOW about growth hormone deficiency?
I have human growth hormone deficiency, and I stopped taking my medicine three years ago when I was thirteen because I just wasn't getting any taller. I'm 4'11, and sixteen years old. will my boobs grow any more?

PLEASE only answer if you have actual experience in this area or if you are an endorcrinologist or something.

Best answer:

Answer by Jen S
I have adult onset GHD. I take HGH.
Do you see an endocrinologist for possibly other issues? I ask as when one hormone is off, often others go as well. The endocrine system is a system and it needs all its parts to work.
If you need to go back on HGH for height, you may have to do it soon as your growth plates will close soon if they have not closed already.
It is possible that the lack of breasts may be linked to an estrogen, adrenal or thyroid issue.
Find an endocrinologist to test you comprehensively. Magic Foundation has a great list and is a good resource for support and doctors.

Silvester Stallone is in a legal battle in Australia for having 48 vials of HGH in his luggage. What is it for? And why would he have it?

Best answer:

Answer by ioerr
A long time ago at Temple University some mice were shot up with growth hormone just for laughs. Their lifespans were dramatically increased thereby.

Human growth hormone has enjoyed some fame as a supposed life extension strategy since then. The body produces it naturally, but production drops off with age.

I believe athletes like to fool around with it in the course of body building also.

You can also shoot up kids with it before they finish puberty. It will increase the size they eventually grow to.

Some minor side effects include acromelagy and probably about 18 different kinds of horrible cancer.

I am the smallest girl in my class. I'm only 4 foot 5 at the age 12! What are some good foods I can eat to help me have a growth spirt?? (before school starts?)

Best answer:

Answer by Timid Women Rarely Make History
Whole Eggs, fish, milk and legumes are protein rich diet. Some foods reduce the activity of the human growth hormones that make you taller. So these foods must be excluded from your diet. These foods include carbohydrates and fats. Carbohydrate rich foods like cereals, bread and rice hinder growth. Europeans consume more of proteins in their diet than carbohydrates and hence they are taller than Asians who eat carbohydrate rich foods.

Meats contain a lot of lipids and saturated fats that impede growth. So don't eat too much meat. If you are eating non vegetarian food stick to lean red meats, fish liver or sea food like Pink salmon with long bones, blue crabs, rainbow trouts and clams that are low in fat content. Avoid pastries, sweets, sodas and crispies which are high in fat content. Alcohol, drugs and smoking can also retard growth.

Calcium is a prerequisite for growth of healthy bones. Hence foods rich in calcium like milk and other dairy products like yogurt and cheese should necessarily form part of your diet. Leafy vegetables are another source of calcium.

Will steroids ever really be out of baseball?

Question by BRAVESFAN: Will steroids ever really be out of baseball?
When the players have millions of dollars and can get human growth hormones and the league doesnt even test for it how will it ever be out of baseball? If the players do not want steroids in the game why does the players union always fight testing? last but not least if these players can find these substances dont you think they could find a way to cover it up?
Porno I think hes got a chance...

Best answer:

Answer by Trey
The only way steriods will ever completely be out of baseball is when the league stops the players from taking steriods. If you made millions of dollars for hitting a ball and if steriods won't get your 'fired' from your job, but helped you make more money you would do it to. It is time for Bud Selig to start drug testing on a normal basis, but do not tell the players in advance. Walk in the dressing room and choose 5 random players to test without them knowing, that is how steriods will be gone. If you get caught with steriods then you should be fined and suspended.

What's the difference between HGH (Human Growth Hormone) & Cortisone baseball players used. Are they both illegal?

Best answer:

Answer by Filqnkishiq
cortisone is a steroid hormone
It is one of the main hormones released by the adrenal gland in response to stress. In chemical structure, it is a corticosteroid closely related to corticosterone. It is used to treat a variety of ailments and can be administered intravenously, orally, intraarticularly, or transcutaneously. Cortisone suppresses the immune system, thus reducing inflammation and attendant pain and swelling at the site of the injury. Risks exist, in particular in the long-term use of cortisone.

Growth hormone (GH) is a peptide hormone that stimulates growth, cell reproduction and regeneration in humans and other animals. Growth hormone is a 191-amino acid, single-chain polypeptide that is synthesized, stored, and secreted by the somatotroph cells within the lateral wings of the anterior pituitary gland. Somatotropin (STH) refers to the growth hormone 1 produced naturally in animals, whereas the term somatropin refers to growth hormone produced by recombinant DNA technology,[1] and is abbreviated "HGH" in humans.

Growth hormone is used as a prescription drug in medicine to treat children's growth disorders and adult growth hormone deficiency. In the United States, it is only available legally from pharmacies, by prescription from a doctor. In recent years in the United States, some doctors have started to prescribe growth hormone in GH-deficient older patients (but not on healthy people) to increase vitality. While legal, the efficacy and safety of this use for HGH has not been tested in a clinical trial. At this time, HGH is still considered a very complex hormone, and many of its functions are still unknown.[2]

In its role as an anabolic agent, HGH has been abused by competitors in sports since the 1970s, and it has been banned by the IOC and NCAA. Traditional urine analysis could not detect doping with HGH, so the ban was unenforceable until the early 2000s when blood tests that could distinguish between natural and artificial HGH were starting to be developed. Blood tests conducted by WADA at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece targeted primarily HGH.[2] This use for the drug is not approved by the FDA; GH is legally available only by prescription in the United States.

GH has been studied for use in raising livestock more efficiently in industrial agriculture and several efforts have been made to obtain governmental approval to use GH in livestock production. These uses have been controversial. In the United States, the only FDA-approved use of GH for livestock is the use of a cow-specific form of GH called bovine somatotropin for increasing milk production in dairy cows. Now retailers are permitted to label containers of milk as produced with or without bovine somatotropin.

hgh is illegal
but cortisone dont know
