Not a lot you can do with your height. It's the way it'll be just about nomatter what you do. You can help a little by drinking lots of milk, I don't know if it is a known fact, but I'm about your age, actually a little younger, don't have many tall relatives or parents, and I'm about six foot, and I drink about 4 or 5 glasses a day. I've heard that dark green vegetables help.

The only way you can really grow more is just drink milk or foods with high amounts of calcium. Yogurt and granola also gives you a good amount of protein but just take your vitamins and hope for the best.
ReplyDeleteBut then again, in terms of basketball I wouldn't suggest trying to grow more only if you've experienced a sudden increase in growth or a sudden decrease since your position in the game would otherwise stay the same.
As a 5'9" or 5'10" freshman there's good chances you're going to be put in as a power forward since there's probably going to be someone else who'll make the team at about 6 feet or taller. Your main job will be to make sure the center can crash the boards and help him out with rebounding along with shooting along the baseline. The center will be the one setting the picks and you'll have to work simultaniously with him.
But as a center with 8 years experience I can tell you that it's always a good thing to have taller forwards helping you out. Plus you have the shorter guards who'll probably be better at long-range shooting. Your position in a 2-1-2 X defense will be right down at the basket with the center so if you have that taller edge you'll probably do better.
Otherwise don't worry about it too much. If you already have the skills of the game you should find some way to fit in with the team and help them out. And if you don't make the team you can join other sports, and this exact situation happened to me this past winter. I tried out for my school's team but I was a cripple on offense but a division 2 college player on defense but they didn't take me. I joined the swim team and I'm likely to be the team's best backstroker this season, so if you don't make the team it's not the end of the road for you. You can also participate in local recreational teams or if your school has one you can join winter weightlifting. It's a great way to get in shape for track or baseball too.
Eat lots of protein and drink lots of milk
