The only way steriods will ever completely be out of baseball is when the league stops the players from taking steriods. If you made millions of dollars for hitting a ball and if steriods won't get your 'fired' from your job, but helped you make more money you would do it to. It is time for Bud Selig to start drug testing on a normal basis, but do not tell the players in advance. Walk in the dressing room and choose 5 random players to test without them knowing, that is how steriods will be gone. If you get caught with steriods then you should be fined and suspended.
What do you think? Answer below!
Victor Conte said it best, "I am not the guy you shold worry about, I have been caught...you need to worry about the other 500 guys out there still producing!" The drug industry will always stay ahead of the MLB testing programs and as long as that happens players will test the boundaries. Players historically have tested how far they can go before they get the reigns pulled back, take hollowing out the end of the bat, players kept creeping that hollow end deeper and deeper until MLB decided to make a rule for how deep it can be...that was under a different Commissioenr who had a back bone and legs to stand on, this Commissioner has neither so as long as he is involved there will never be a real resolution to the problem...the players will always stay a step ahead...whether it is a new drug that is not being tested for or better masking agents to make sure that they are not caught, the players will always be in the lead!
ReplyDeleteI do not think it is reasonable to think that baseball will some day be completely be free of steroids. You can do all the testing you want, you can impose all the rules you want, you can fine and ban players all you want, but there will always be some players who just think they can get away with it.
ReplyDeleteCan't the same be said about society and drugs? Or better yet, society and murder? Murdering has been fundamentally illegal since the beginning of time and there still are people doing it! The fact of the matter is this: there will always be cheaters in every sport, it is only really a question of HOW they will cheat.
First off, nice to see a fellow Braves fan. Think Javy makes the team this year? :)
ReplyDeleteAnd no... no way steroids will ever be out of professional sports. There will always be the desire to be bigger/faster/stronger. You couple that with the geniuses (literally) who are wasting their mental talents on "the science of steroids" instead of curing cancer, and there is just no way.
Every time a new test method is discovered, there is someone or some company five minutes behind them ready to create a way to get around the tests. From scientific compounds that mask steroid use to crude cheats like "the whizzinator", there will always be cheaters.
Personally I think the only way professional sports start to cut down on steroid usage is if a lot of very big names step forward and blast the users/cheaters. Today, pro athletes are busy saying "not me, not me" and I wish some pros would step up and announce "If you cheat and take steroids then I don't want you on my team, in my locker-room, or meeting my kids." Only when it becomes unacceptable amongst the athletes (not just the viewing public) will we see steroid usage stop, or at least slow.
Personally everytime one of my heroes of yesteryear (David Justice, say it ain't so) is mentioned in the same breath as steroids, I can't help but sing some Simon and Garfunkel.
"Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio? A nation turns it's lonely eyes to you."
Are spit balls or corked bats? (-:
ReplyDeleteVery doubtful.
