What should I do about my really small twelve year old?

Question by plurplszr: What should I do about my really small twelve year old?
My son is in the tenth percentil of his age group. People think that he is eight years old. He has always followed his growth curve and his doctor has mentioned the potential of human growth hormone in benefiting him. He has no medical conditions. His father is 6'4 and I am 5'3". His doctor says he should be six foot when he does grow, but it seems like he will never hit a growth spurt. It effects his self esteem when every one calls him shorty, and his friends lean there elbows on his head. I don;t know if I should pursue the growth hormone shots or see where nature takes him?

See where nature takes him. Those hormones might have bad affects later. Just tell him to stand up for himself.

  2. This is like deja vu for me!
My daughter was the same way...to the point where we had bone scans done and everything to make sure she didn't have a growth problem. Our other 3 children were always the tallest in their grade. I guess we just figured she'd be a late bloomer. Our doctor didn't want to put her on growth hormones because they have negative effects...so we just left it.

Well, she is now 21 years old and 3 inches taller than her older sister! She is 5'9" - it's amazing! She just shot up in her high school years. Just let him grow at his own pace - I would NOT recommend treating him with growth hormones. Some kids just grow late!

  4. I'm 13 and 4'6, so I know how he feels. My doctor talked about the growth hormone but said that since I had my period for a few years and had a medical condition when I was younger, it wouldn't be the best of ideas and there would be nothing they could do to help me. This does hurt me as people always comment negatively on my height, not to mention also guess my age wrong (last person who guessed thought I was 9!) I say do what you can while you still can, as it does affect your self esteem and can really hurt your confidence
